Selecting a Moisture Analyzer
What they Do:
Moisture Analyzers can generally be described as a scale with an oven mounted to it, that can heat a test sample without being involved in the weighing process. These devices are used to measure the moisture content of test samples, or to measure the quantity of high vapor pressure contents that can be driven off at specific temperatures. Moisture Analyzers can be used for materials research as well as production testing of foods or manufactured items.
Specifications: 50g-120g/0.001g – 0.01%; 60g/0.01g – 0.1%
Temperature:
The temperature that the moisture analyzer can operate at is a big factor when working with a variety of samples. Torbal analyzers dry at up to 250 degrees Centigrade. The oven uses two 500 Watt Halogen Bulbs, each operating at ½ their rated voltage. By working at half-mass the bulbs are able to provide a reliable, long lasting life source of 250 Watts of high speed heating for moisture samples. The oven is capable of reaching maximum temperature in a short period of time and can use this capability in a preheat cycle to reduce overall testing time. This feature is available in the professional Series only.
Drying Profiles:
Moisture Analyzers are now being fitted with Multiple Drying Profiles and Analysis Modes. The Drying Profiles that Torbal offers are Standard, Slow, Step, and Rapid. In addition, the user can select one of three Analysis Modes (different equations defining the process). Having custom drying profiles to choose from helps to customize the analyzer to the application being performed.
What else to Look for:
Keypad – Torbal AGS moisture scales and analyzers use a 20-Key Sealed Front panel Keyboard. The keyboard is very advanced with 10 Numerical buttons, which double as Function and Navigation Keys. This simple design makes the analyzer intuitive and allows the user to perform tests in a fraction of the time of other models.
Display – Unlike typical scales, the sample being analyzed is not directly visible to the operator. This problem is resolved by displaying as much information as possible throughout the drying process. Increasingly visual displays allow for easier, more informed testing. Torbal analyzers are equipped with Graphical LCD Displays with onscreen Graph Plotting. All units use a pixel type display that makes the plotting of results on the display screen a reality. The Precision Series additionally allows the display to be viewed in either the normal (positive) mode of black on white, or the negative mode of white on black.
PC Connectivity – Being able to transfer results directly to a computer is especially important for quality control purposes. Many times companies integrate their analyzers with QC software. Having quick and easy access to a computer is essential in these situations. Torbal moisture analyzers come with USB, RS232, and PS2 interfaces.
Conclusion:
Moisture analyzers at first glance have many qualities of a typical laboratory scale, but the truth couldn’t be further off. Moisture analyzers require extremely high temperatures to be performed simultaneously with accurate weighing. Unless a quality analyzer is used, results can vary greatly. In addition a graphical display plays a big role in analyzing results.
