Platform scales are available in a variety of configurations which make using them simple and convenient. The platform itself is available in various materials, the most popular of which is polished stainless steel. There are waterproof versions and hermetically sealed versions.  The display portion of the scale, referred to as the Indicator, usually sits on top of a vertical column for ease of viewing. Some indicators are designed for wall mounting, which provides better viewing angles in some situations. The indicator also includes a keyboard which is used to input commands to the scale.

The over range capability of a platform scale is important. Many users have a tendency to drop packages on the platform rather than placing them down gently. The impact from the drop can take the strain gauge in the scale beyond its elastic limit, and cause permanent damage. Treat the scale as you would any other high accuracy device.

The platform scale requires the user to level the scale every time it is moved to a new location. Leveling the scale is important as it impacts the scale’s reading accuracy. Most platform scales provide a leveling bubble and adjustable feet that are used in the leveling process.

There are battery operated portable platform scales that can be used in areas where power outlets are scarce. These battery operated devices are just as accurate as normal AC powered units until their battery voltage drops to a discharged level. This type of scale usually uses a low-power display, such as an LCD display.

Platform scales can be used for check weighing and some have special indicators to display the high-go-low results. Many platform scales are multifunction scales capable of such measurements as percent weighting, totalizing, and parts counting. These scales can be very useful in quality control procedures. Almost every shipping department has a platform scale of some type to weigh packages before they are shipped.

The platform scale is one of industries workhorses and will be for a long time.
