In 1975, Vertex Industries acquired Torbal. The company’s primary focus was the automatic identification market ( bar codes, mag stripes, etc. ); very little effort was put into new product development for Torbal. At the start of the 21st Century, Torbal was acquired by Fulcrum, Incorporated. At that point in time, Torbal’s primary emphasis was the pharmacy market. Fulcrum made the decision to place a much greater emphasis on the laboratory and analytical marketplace. A full line of laboratory and analytical scales has been introduced, which includes some of the most advanced features available in the market. These features include automatic internal calibration, a very wide range of weighing functions ( including statistics ) and ergonomic keyboards.

Torbal has not neglected its pharmacy business and has, in fact, recently introduced what is far and away the most advanced pharmacy balance on the market, the DRX-500s. This balance performs drug verification, pill counting and compounding. It will store 10,000 drug UPC codes, names, ID numbers and sample weights. It is the only scale that stores lot numbers with automatic update reminders, to provide the highest counting accuracy possible by keeping sample weights current.

As Torbal looks to the future, it expects to broaden its product base, possibly in the area of semi-micro balances, and add higher capacity scales for both the laboratory and industrial markets. Torbal is also investigating the possibility of producing related laboratory instruments in a comparable price range. Torbal has recently moved to new facilities, which should aid both its growth and ability to serve its customers. The company is growth-oriented, but expects to maintain its focus in the pharmacy, laboratory and analytical marketplaces. Torbal is striving to maintain the high level of quality and service that its customers have come to expect over the past 110 years.
