They come in either analog or digital and range is size from bench size to large outdoor models capable of weighing several tons. Platform scales do give up a little bit of accuracy for their ability to handle large volume.
Balance Scales were considered top of the line before the invention of digital scales. These were the first weighing instruments invented. They are still sometimes used today.
